I recently attended a Corporate Quality Training session and I happened to have a chance of attending the same training a few months ago with another facilitator
-- I learnt a few things about facilitation skills from the trainer (Corporate Quality be damned.. i took away something else)
The 2 trainers were completely different in their skill sets
The recent one (Lets call him MR. X) was more calm than the previous one (Lets call him Mr Y), Calm in not a good way .... lets say Mr. Y was heavily charged up. Mr X ended up making things boring by not being as passionate about a dry dull topic ... he could not elicit a great response from the crowd

Now something positive abt MR X, he made sure that the crowd was not intimidated by the subject he was teaching, as against MR.Y.

MR Y Started with something very complex and then he broke it down to simple units for the audience to understand the concept. this approach created a mental block in some of the audience members whereas others were highly impressed and monitvated.

MR X Started with small units of the very complex concept and he allowed the audience to patch it up together hence creating an air of simplicity and hence making sure that no one has any kind mental block.

MR Y was successful in making the minds of the audience buzz way after the training was over as he was successfull in challenging them.

as against the fact that The audience promptly forgot what MR X tought them as their Brain cells did not recieve enough excercise.

So the moral of the story is - every facilitator needs to change the way he/she teaches his subject with the kind of audience he is hadling

If its a mature audience who is intereseted and the psycological profile is that of a problem solver who does not get intimidated by big complex theories he should apply Mr Y's approach of giving the audience fodder for thought before giving away the explination.

if the audience is not mature and belongs majorly to the production floor - ie - if they are already stressed out they are highly unlikely to open there minds to the MR Y approach and they would like to get things explianed to them in a plain language.
